Bernie Moreno Insults Women
Press Release | September 24, 2024
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following reporting of comments from senate candidate Bernie Moreno about voters who support abortion rights, Abortion Forward Executive Director Kellie Copeland made the following statement:
“Bernie Moreno’s attack on voters who care about abortion rights is a mean-spirited insult and proof that he is unfit for public office. His backhanded comments about women like me are a sign that he does not respect us, should never be allowed to represent us, and needs to be rejected by Ohio voters. My girls have the same right to bodily autonomy that I had at their age, and I’m damned sure going to fight like hell to protect them from men like Bernie Moreno. Abortion Forward is proud to endorse his opponent, Sen. Sherrod Brown, because he’s always been on the side of women in Ohio and we know he always will be.”
Moreno’s comments come less than one week after reporting from ProPublica confirmed what experts have been saying for years: that patients are dying due to state abortion bans. On the deadly implications of Moreno’s stance on abortion, Copeland added: “Abortion access is life-saving. This month, we learned of two people whose deaths could be directly linked to their state abortion ban. Candi Miller was a 41-year-old mother of three. Amber Nicole Thurman was a 28-year old mother of a six-year old boy. If elected, Bernie Moreno would nationalize the abortion ban that killed Amber and Candi, and harmed countless individuals in other states. He would subject patients in every state in the nation to the same cruel fate. He has made it clear that he supports no exceptions to abortion bans. In the US Senate, he would be the 51st and deciding vote on a federal ban that would overrule Ohio’s new abortion rights amendment. His disrespectful attitude, his policy positions, and that horrific outcome are wholly unacceptable.”
