John Kasich and Mike DeWine denying women care in Toledo
Press Release | April 25, 2018
Columbus — The all-Republican Supreme Court of Ohio has rejected a motion to reconsider in their ruling against Capital Care Network, despite the clinic having met all transfer agreement requirements. The Ohio Department of Health should reinstate the license for the clinic immediately to ensure continuity of care for women seeking safe and legal abortion services in Northwest Ohio.
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “This morning, a woman in Toledo woke up with the knowledge that she needed an abortion. There is a clinic in her community that can offer her safe and professional care. That clinic has met all state requirements to provide abortion services. John Kasich and Mike DeWine are standing in between that woman and this clinic, and they are violating her rights as they do so.
“The Ohio Department of Health and the Attorney General’s offices should not be political weapons, but Gov. Kasich and AG DeWine have used these offices to harm women for the past seven years. Their actions are ugly, they are shameful, and they are dangerous. The Ohio Department of Health must restore the license for Capital Care immediately.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio has always maintained that these requirements are unconstitutional. A separate challenge in federal court by abortion providers in Cincinnati and Dayton will continue this argument, supported by the 2016 Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt decision.
