SCOTUS rules against an attempt to block access to Mifepristone
Press Release | June 13, 2024
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The US Supreme Court has ruled 9-0 against an attempt to end FDA approval of the most commonly used abortion medication. Anti-abortion groups sued the FDA over its initial approval of mifepristone. The lawsuit, Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA, sought to revoke FDA approval of the medication and remove it from the market nationwide.
Abortion Forward Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “Today’s Supreme Court decision was a small win, but there’s still a much larger fight to restore full federal protection for abortion rights. We need to block a federal ban on abortion, which is supported by US Senate candidate Bernie Moreno. Moreno does not respect Ohioans’ reproductive rights and would be a disaster in Congress. Bernie Moreno is unfit for office and should be rejected.”
Copeland continued: “Even with this inappropriate lawsuit defeated, anti-abortion extremists are continuing to search for any way they can block abortion access. Lawmakers and courts must listen to voters in states like Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and across the country as we all loudly and clearly affirm that abortion access is an American right.”
While Ohio voters approved an abortion rights ballot initiative in 2023, the Ohio Reproductive Freedom Amendment still needs to be fully implemented by courts as multiple challenges against the state’s existing abortion bans and restrictions are brought forward. Abortion Forward is working to remind voters in the Buckeye State that abortion is on the ballot in 2024, this time in the form of three seats on the Supreme Court of Ohio, the US Senate seat, and a redistricting reform measure that is expected to qualify for the November ballot.
