Trump Taps JD Vance for His Vice-Presidential Nominee

AKRON, Ohio — Donald Trump announced JD Vance as his vice-presidential nominee today. They both are staunch supporters of dangerous abortion bans, but are fabricating lies about their records on abortion in the wake the 2023 Ohio abortion rights ballot initiative. Both men are trying to apply messaging tactics on abortion that Ohio voters saw from opponents of abortion rights last year. 

Abortion Forward Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “Trump and Vance will do and say anything to get elected, but they can’t hide from the truth of their anti-abortion records. Make no mistake, their agenda is clear. They will ignore the will of the people, and ban abortion across this nation. Trump believes that people who have abortions should be punished. Trump and Vance are not, as they have described themselves, ‘pragmatic leaders.’ They are manipulative politicians that support banning abortion but are willing to say differently to get elected. Trump and Vance had the chance to support policies to protect patients, instead they have done whatever they could to block abortion access. Voters will see through the lies and reject their anti-abortion agenda.” 

Ms. Copeland examined Trump’s claims that he made in the first 2024 Presidential Debate in an op-ed in the Columbus Dispatch (July 9, 2024): “Did Trump ever push for these exceptions as president? No. Did Trump ever ask Congress for a bill to write these exceptions into federal law? No. Republicans controlled the U.S. House and Senate while Trump was president, but these exceptions he claims to believe in were never sent to his desk, and he never asked for them to be proposed. His actions don’t back up his words.”
