Wasteful DeWine Wants to Appeal
Press Release | March 15, 2018
Columbus — Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has said he will appeal a judge’s preliminary injunction blocking the Down syndrome abortion ban.
NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “Mike DeWine is wasting tax payer dollars to attack women’s rights, all in a shameless attempt to advance his campaign for governor. The Down syndrome abortion ban violates four and a half decades of legal precedent that says a woman has the unfettered right to choose whether to end a pregnancy before the point of viability. Women are perfectly able to make their own medical decisions. They don’t need political interference from Mike DeWine, John Kasich, and their cronies at the Statehouse.”
A 2017 analysis from the Legislative Service Commission found that in recent years Indiana has spent $2.8 million, Texas spent $4.5 million, and Arizona spent $2.2 million in efforts to defend their unconstitutional abortion bans. With Kasich having signed 20 various abortion bans and restrictions, Ohio’s legal bills could exceed these figures.
