With Abortion on the Ballot Again, Abortion Forward Endorses Slate to Protect Access
Press Release | September 3, 2024
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio voters will return to the polls for the first General Election vote since enshrining reproductive freedom in the Ohio Constitution, and abortion rights continue to be the driving issue in many key races. With an eye on upcoming court battles and a national debate on federal abortion policy, Abortion Forward is announcing our endorsements and recommendations for federal and state offices.
On our first-ever endorsement for President of the United States, Abortion Forward Executive Director Kellie Copeland said: “We are thrilled to endorse Kamala Harris for President! Kamala Harris has been impressing our team since the day America saw her grill Brett Kavanaugh during his Supreme Court confirmation hearing. Kamala Harris is a serious and determined champion for abortion access and has the exact upstanding strength and moral fiber we need in the White House. She will establish a new national policy protecting everyone’s reproductive freedom. Ohio voters need to elect her to get this job done.”
On the Supreme Court of Ohio: “Reproductive freedom and abortion rights are on the ballot in Ohio in 2024, but this time it’s in the form of judicial candidates. The Ohio Reproductive Freedom Amendment established a clear framework protecting everyone’s right to access abortion, but it is up to our court system to make sure that this amendment doesn’t just become a meaningless piece of paper. We need justices that will enforce and not ignore it. Ohio Supreme Court candidates Melody Stewart, Michael Donnelly, and Lisa Forbes are the most important names for Ohio voters to know and elect in 2024.”
On Ohio’s US Senate race, Copeland continued: “In 2025, Congress is going to write a bill on abortion. Is it going to be a Republican-written national abortion ban that overturns Ohio’s state constitutional amendment? Or will it be a law drafted to protect abortion access equally in every state? Control of that debate is going to be decided when Ohio re-elects Sen. Sherrod Brown. His record on abortion and reproductive rights is impeccable and we are endorsing him because our country needs the same protections nationally that we have in Ohio.”
